DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about the Vikings? Then visit Castlerock Museum in Alma\, Wisconsin on Saturday\, April 11th from 10am – 4pm for the museum’s annual “Meet the Vikings” event\, a daylong celebration of all things “Viking.” \nReenactors will be on hand to answer questions about Viking history\, culture\, clothing\, and weapons. There will be programs in the museum theater on Greenland in the Viking Age at 11am\, Viking Clothing at 1pm\, and Viking Weapons\, Armor\, and Tactics at 2pm. The latter will be followed by a shield wall demonstration\, weather permitting. Ongoing demonstrations include flax weaving and woodworking. Visitors can also see several actual Viking era artifacts on display including a spangenhelm\, chieftain’s sword\, and Danish axe. \nAdmission is $8 for adults and $5 for students. It’s always a special day\, and we hope you can come to be a part of it!  \nFilm \nSpirit of the Driftless: The film takes audiences on an extraordinary journey—soaring with raptors\, hiking rugged bluffs\, paddling quiet waters\, exploring archaeological features\, and venturing into hidden caves. It truly embodies the Spirit of the Driftless. The movie is dedicated to George Howe\, a founder of Sustainable Driftless\, Inc.\, who led the filming expeditions but passed away in February 2024 before the editing was complete. \n“It is a fitting tribute to George to finalize the film project he was so passionate about\,” said Tim Jacobson\, president of Sustainable Driftless. “His spirit lives on through this film and the causes he championed.” \nSpirit of the Driftless offers a fresh perspective on the landscape\, with a different feel and flavor from its predecessor. Decoding the Driftless earned a regional Emmy\, more than 20 film festival awards (including some internationally)\, and continues to air widely on PBS. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 16th at 2pm\, Sara Thielen will discuss “Medicine in Western Wisconsin during the Frontier Days” at Castlerock Museum in Alma\, Wisconsin.\n\nThe frontier days were dangerous times. Injuries from hunting and farming happened without cell phones to call for an ambulance. Without a pharmacy\, there was no way to purchase medicine to bring down a child’s fever or soothe a cough. Doctors were in very short supply\, if they existed at all in the area. So\, what did the people who lived in the communities along the Mississippi River and the surrounding rural communities do when their lives were in danger?\n\nSara Thielen is the Public Health nurse with Buffalo County Public Health. In her spare time\, she reads and studies history. She has combined her love of nursing\, history\, and Western Wisconsin in this presentation. She will explore the different diseases and common medical treatments of the past. It might not be a surprise that it wasn’t much different than today.\nAdmission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and free for members. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by contacting the museum at 608-685-4231.

SUMMARY:Fire in the Shire
DESCRIPTION:Visit Alma\, Wisconsin on Saturday\, June 6th from 10am-4pm for Castlerock Museum’s annual Fire in the Shire event\, a citywide celebration of all things medieval.\nThe highlight of the day will be the various demonstrations taking place on the street in front of the museum. Kazimir the Hungry will be breathing fire and swallowing swords and the Wisconsin Historical Fencing Association will be doing various fighting demonstrations. There will also be ongoing displays by Clann Tartan\, A Life Medieval\, and Hangin’ with the Bard in the museum courtyard. Bardmageddon will be performing in the museum theater and One Eye Dave’s Hotdogs will provide concessions.\nVisitors interested in searching for the fabled “Holy Grail” in the shops of the shire can enter a drawing to win the treasured artifact along with $100 Alma Dollars. There will also be plenty of merry making with the Midwest Renaissance Actors Guild performing on Main Street.\nA full schedule of the days events will be available in the coming weeks. Admission wristbands are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Visitors in ancient\, medieval\, or renaissance era dress get $2 off and children four and under are free.

That song about the lost lovers and the dance hall…” \nHe stopped for a moment before his Scottish reserve reasserted itself. \n“I really liked that one.” \nA fine finger-style guitarist with a precise baritone\, Kray Van Kirk has a Ph.D. from the University of Alaska\, but he set science aside to write songs\, tell stories and summon heroes. \n“We are driven by myth and the seasons of the heart\,” he says\, “and the stories are all true. There is a dark cave inside each of us\, and monsters of all kinds lurk there\, all the more lethal for being hidden. The quest is to journey inside\, render the monsters powerless\, find whatever it is that burns at the core of your soul and bring it back into the light. In a world divided it is critical to write songs and tell stories that show absolutely everyone they get to be the hero.
